Our House
Joshua spoke: As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord! Joshua 24:15 Traditionally, Minnesotans have thought of summer as a “slower” time of the year. What a misnomer that is especially at this “house” we know as Zion Lutheran of Buffalo. Zion is a household filled with people who serve the Lord. It is amazing to see
Shine Jesus’ Light
Summer has arrived in a big way with hotter than average temperatures and smoke in the skies. Big things are happening at Zion as well. The Call Committee continues to make good progress in their search for an Associate Pastor for Zion. Vacation Bible School was a great success with more kids than last year and an outpouring of volunteers
Menstrual Supplies
In Bathrooms at Zion You may notice something new when you walk into a bathroom at Zion. Along with the usual supplies like toilet paper, hand soap, and hand dryers, there will now also be pads and tampons available. A donation has been made to supply the bathrooms of Zion with menstrual products for the next year. The goals of
Mission Jamaica 2024
Most of us have felt the “tug” to do something when we see ads or documentaries on children and families affected by the many aspects of third-world poverty. Going from that tug to participating in a third-world mission trip may seem like a bigger step than many of us can manage. However, if you would like to “do something” more
Hello Zion Kids and Families!
We hope you are all enjoying your summer! There are so many wonderful moments to recognize from VBS. What an AWESOME, AMAZING, STELLAR, COSMIC ADVENTURE VBS WEEK WAS! We can’t thank our VBS Volunteers enough for all their time and commitment. We had an amazing week, and we couldn’t have done it without each and every one of them! We
Kid’s Choice Continues Through The Summer Months
The Social Ministry team helps children in the area by teaming with the Buffalo Food Shelf to pack ‘KID’S CHOICE’ bags for school-age children when they are home from school during the summer months of June, July, and August. Studies show that children who eat nutritiously function better. To provide proper nutrition for children, Zion Volunteers pack and distribute three
Finance Report 2023.08
We have now completed the first half of 2023. The following summarizes Zion’s financial condition as of the end of June. Our General Fund offering/income continues to exceed that which we had in 2022 by about 5%. Average weekly income this year to date is $14,724. However, expenses for the same period are also increasing due to personnel changes, increased
Stewardship Report 2023.08
As followers of Christ, we are called to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves. One of the ways we can express our love is through stewardship: the responsible use of the gifts and resources that God has entrusted to us. Stewardship is not only about money, but also about our time, talents, abilities, and passions. There are many
Harvest of Hands 2023.08
The summer is breezing by. Before you know it, it will be time for our Christmas Market event! We are looking for more recipes… Does your family have a very favorite Christmas cookie? And are you willing to share the recipe? Harvest of Hands is thinking of compiling a small collection of special recipes into a “ZION Families Favorite Christmas

“Foundations for Farming” at the School of Hope
Our mission partner, the School of Hope in Zambia, has embarked upon a new program of agricultural training for youth and young adults. This agricultural training program is approved by the Zambian government and includes the principles of the “Foundations for Farming” initiative. The focus of the program is to provide training for young people by giving them the knowledge
“See, I am making all things new.” Revelation 21:5 NRSV
“Making all things new.” Take note of the verb tense. Making. In the Greek, that active voice of the verb is emphasized even more than our English language can portray. God is “ongoing-ly” making all things new. It’s not translated, “I made all things new,” but rather, “…I am making all things new.” The trajectory is clear—God is still working.
Call Committee Update 2023.05
I am happy to officially announce the Council has selected the members of the Call Committee for the Associate Pastor. I want to personally thank and recognize the congregants who have volunteered to be part of this important next step for Zion. The members are a good mix of individuals, with varied backgrounds, and are eager to initiate the call.
A Sunday to Celebrate!
Giving thanks to God for the work of our Sr. Pastor Call Committee, Zion welcomed Pastor John Hulden, Assistant to the Bishop in the Minneapolis Area Synod to preach the sermon and install our Senior Pastor. It was a day of celebrating a long-awaited new chapter in the life of our congregation. The fourth Sunday in Easter is always Good

The Finance Committee would like to share the following information about Zion’s finances as of the end of April 2023. Our General Fund income/offering for the month of April was about $81,000 which is almost 3% lower than what was received in April of 2022. For the first four months of this year, our average weekly income/offering is $15,214 which is
Wednesday Morning Workers 2023.05
Zion’s Wednesday morning workers have been meeting for about three years. Just as the name implies, every Wednesday morning in the spring and fall, the group gets together to do whatever jobs are needed around Zion and Zion’s properties. Bob Quady organizes the projects and lets everyone know where to meet and what tools might be needed for any given

Ukrainian Families Adjusting Well
Thanks to Zion members and the surrounding community for the tremendous support you have given to the Ukrainian families that have been displaced by the war. Too Busy?
My first Call was to serve a rural parish in North Dakota. The location was further North than I had ever traveled. I felt like I had gone to the ends of the earth. Still, I wouldn’t exchange those first years of ministry in North Dakota for anything else. The ministry was challenging, but the people were warm and kind.
New Children & Family Ministry Staff
Children & Family Ministry has two new members joining the team! With a great deal of joy and excitement, we introduce Zion’s two newest staff members. The Children and Family Ministry team has been operating with only a few staff members for far too long. Kristin Lotthammer, our Coordinator of Sunday School, along with Lora Nichols, former Ministry Assistant with
Summer in the Northland
Summer will soon be here! After the deep snows in April, it seemed like we’d never see green grass again. As all Minnesotans know, summer will be fleeting, and we need to take advantage of the nice days while they are here. But just like the inevitable road construction season, Zion, along with most churches, will be facing the traditional
Future Mission Trip Opportunities
For many years, Zion has provided global travel opportunities to participate with our mission partners in Jamaica and Zambia. These mission trips combine a service project with time for reflection and spiritual rest. The Mission trip schedule has been alternating between odd and even years between Jamaica and Zambia. Participating in one of these mission trips is a great way
Zion Cemetery Update
During its spring meeting, the Zion Cemetery Board approved a number of improvements at the Zion Cemetery for the summer of 2023. The Zion cemetery is located about two miles south of the church, at the intersection of Hwy 25 and 10th Street SE, and was the location of the original Carlslund Lutheran Church building. In 2021, Zion purchased three
Financial Report 2023.03
The income/offering to the General Fund in March again exceeds that given in March of 2022. This month’s increase amounts to almost $1,800 per Sunday. At the same time, our General Fund expenses for the month have exceeded our monthly income by about $29,000. This month’s deficit is primarily due to greater participation in our youth programs (a wonderful problem!),
Foundation vs Memorials
At Zion we talk about both the Zion Foundation and the Memorial Fund, but what is the difference? One major difference is that the dollars donated to the Zion Foundation are invested, and only the gains from the investment are spent on projects (often called an “endowment”). All dollars given to the Memorial Fund are spent. Another difference is that
A New Beginning
“Jesus said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:30 If this is where our story ended, we would be living a very different kind of life. Death would have the final word. Where would our hope be? Dead. Where would our joy be? Dead. We would stand at a crossroads that offered
Perspective
We recently experienced a good, old-fashioned, snowstorm. While it didn’t quite live up to the media hype of a “Storm of the Century”, it definitely did have a high impact, making a mess of travel plans and closing schools and businesses, but quietly, I enjoyed it! Don’t worry, I am not suffering from cabin fever, (at least not too badly),
Financial Report 2023.02
Contributions to the General Fund continue to exceed our giving of last year. In February those amounted to about $51,000 which is 11.5% more than last February. Expenses for the month exceeded our income by about $9,800. These are only 1.4% greater than those of a year ago. For the year so far our giving to the General Fund is
A Previous SERVE Weekend
Steve joined us as we took our break. John, Dave, and I had started the morning in jackets and sweatshirts and now we were down to our t-shirts as the day warmed. We ate burgers and fries but he was satisfied with only a malt. Tim had stopped by earlier and dropped off tools and much-needed advice. The prep work
ReLENTless
In last month’s newsletter article, I shared a quote from Andy Mcilvain, who is the author of the blog Enacted Word. Now that we are further into the season of Lent, it bears repeating: God deserves more than our attention; He deserves our affections and focus. He doesn’t just want us to listen to Him. He desires us to know
WiFi Assistive Listening
A WiFi option has been added to the sound system at Zion, allowing those with hearing difficulties in the Sanctuary to listen to worship audio through their own mobile device and headphones, earbuds, or compatible hearing aids via the Listen Everywhere app. To use this service: Download the free app from the iPhone App Store or Google Play Store Connect
Supporting Mission Partners
There has been a lot of excitement and activity around Zion related to the support being provided to the Ukrainian refugees in our community. A valid question: What effect do these efforts have on the long-standing commitments of Zion’s Global Missions Committee to support All Kids Can Learn, International in Zambia; Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Minneapolis; and Mission Jamaica?
Generosity
Pastor Bahe pointed out seven forms of generosity in her January 29 message from the “5 daily habits from the Bible to truly bring joy” sermon series: Generosity of thoughts Generosity of words Generosity of money Generosity of time Generosity of things Generosity of influence Generosity of attention She went on to say: When we are faithful, even in little
Financial Update 2023.01
The January financial reports are another reminder that Zion is moving forward with confidence. Our January offerings to the General Fund were a little over $75,000 which is about 10.5% above those given in January 2022. Our General Fund expenses were about $5,500 greater than last January, most of which is attributable to an increase in personnel – another sign
Ukrainian Family Support
Imagine huddling in a bomb shelter beneath the streets of Mariupol for three weeks trying to comfort a one-and-a-half-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl, listening to bombs destroy your home and city above you. When you finally emerge from the shelter, you drive around burned-out cars with dead bodies strewn on the roadside to escape. The dangerous journey takes you
ReLENTless Pursuit
“The Hound of Heaven” is a long poem written by Francis Thompson, which describes God as the One who continually seeks the writer even though the writer keeps running from Him. It echoes the words from Psalm 139: Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there;

Council Update 2023.01

I was humbled, while also very pleased to be elected to serve as this year’s President of the Council along with Ashley Mattson, as the Vice President. Deb Rude and Joan Halderson agreed to continue the great work
Donating Assets: Maximize Your Impact
“It’s what you sow that multiplies, not what you keep in the barn.” Adrian Rogers Donating monetarily to Zion and/or any charitable organization is great. But did you know, there may be ways to significantly increase your impact by donating appreciated assets such as stocks, mutual funds, and bonds? There are a few benefits of donating the asset directly instead
Financial Report 2022.12
Zion finished 2022 with some excellent financial news. Our average weekly General Fund income for the year was about $15,500 which is about $400 per week greater than we had in 2021. This represents an overall increase of 2.66%. Our December giving to the General Fund was up over 14% compared to the same month in 2021. Expenses for the
Offering Envelope Supply Issue
On Friday, January 6, we communicated with our offering envelope provider about not yet receiving our 2023 January/February envelope packets. Our provider quickly responded by email informing us that due to supply chain issues and their inability to add employees needed, they will not be fulfilling our January/February envelope orders. They determined that if they tried to play “catchup” it

Well, we come to the end of another year. Perhaps a year that has introduced more of what we remember as “normal”, or at least a large step in that direction. Here are a few observations on what I thing are some very positive moves toward a new normal coming in 2023: We have a senior pastor. Should I repeat
Welcome Home
Do you know what I miss? Wall calendars. Yep, I know I’m showing my age! The reason I miss having one, though, is the feeling I would get when opening a new calendar and flipping the page to a new year: JANUARY. That clean slate. That new beginning. You don’t get to experience that in the same way on a
Happy New Year from Harvest of Hands!
Thank you for all your contributions and support for our 2022 – 43rd Anniversary event. It was a magnificent event and many people participated. We are grateful for all your help and participation. Planning Giving into Your Budget
First, choose a charity that you really care about. Of course, I recommend giving to Zion Lutheran Buffalo. But, if giving to an organization outside the Lutheran church, before making any donations, spend a few minutes looking up the nonprofit on watchdog sites such as Charity Navigator, or CharityWatch. These sites rate nonprofits and allow you to find out more
Foundation Blessings
The Zion Foundation is a blessing which carries out ministry and mission through financial grants. The Zion Foundation was officially formed in 1978. It is a result of some great forward-thinking leadership. A Foundation is a non-profit corporation with the general purpose and plan to receive financial gifts and hold the principal of such gifts in perpetuity. Which means, that

Eldor Jordan
January 2016 Eldor Jordan is one of Zion’s newest employees, taking over as evening and weekend custodian when his friend, Dave Lindberg, left the position recently to return to the Enfield rest area where they had worked together. It Is Official: We Have a New Senior Pastor!
On Sunday, December 4, the congregation voted unanimously to extend a call to Rev. Kari Bahe to serve as our Senior Pastor. Although pastors have 30 days to decide whether to accept a call or not, by the next day, the Bishop had received Pastor Bahe’s decision to accept the call to serve as our next Senior Pastor! Thank you
Avoid Phishing Scams
We have received reports of more attempts to scam our members and attenders by someone pretending to be Pastor Bahe. The email message claims to be from Pastor Bahe and generally asks you to reply to the email because there is a request she wants you to handle confidentially or discretely. Unfortunately, because the emails are from someone impersonating Pastor

Year End Charitable Giving Strategies
It’s smart and responsible to take advantage of available tax benefits when giving to a worthy charity like Zion. Following are a few ideas you may want to implement before the end of the year. Donating Appreciated Securities Stocks and other securities like mutual funds that have gained value since purchase can be tax-efficient charitable giving tools. Don’t sell the
Fling Wide the Door!
In a culture that is forever trying to sell us on the lie that there won’t be “enough” to go around, the Advent theme of “fling wide the door” is a welcomed image. Or, is it almost an impossible concept? What comes to mind when you think of a door flung wide open? Wastefulness: “Close that door! We are not
Family
The interesting thing about writing these newsletter articles is I’m writing them a month before you read them. It’s like those movies that jump around in time during the story and you never know if you are in the present (i.e., the past) or in the future (i.e., the present). So, please indulge me as I address events from October
Diapers Distributed
The Serve Planning Team and The Social Ministry Team are so thankful for the generous donation of diapers that took place in September to highlight the ELCA’s annual “God’s Work. Thankful Giving
In the United States, we just celebrated Thanksgiving; a time to thank God for all the blessings He has provided to us. In Zambia, we are also grateful, but basic needs remain a struggle. Zambia is facing another year of severe drought. Lake Kariba, the world’s largest man-made lake and the nation’s main reservoir is at the lowest level since

Financial Report 2022.11
October was again a good month for Zion in terms of our finances. Our General Fund total income for the month was about $71,500 which is a little over 10% higher than that received in October of 2021. And for the first time since last January, our General Fund income exceeded our monthly expenses. For the year to date, however,
Together for a Purpose
In the October newsletter, I wrote about Jesus’ story of the shepherd leaving 99 sheep to go find that one sheep who did not show up for the morning roll call. We considered that there is an element of that story we don’t often focus on. Not only was the one found, but there were also 99 who were there

A Steadfast Anchor
Since we live in the land of 10,000+ lakes, it seems fitting to use the early church imagery of an anchor as we draw ourselves to the truth that we have a hope that is sure and certain. Jesus is our anchor in every storm and in the still waters as well. We are in the middle of a sermon
For This to Be
Fall is one of the best times in Minnesota. The weather is great, school activities are happening, the hunting season starts for those of us so inclined, and we enter the “other” part of the church year when all kinds of activities begin. But, there’s a catch. For the congregation to be, we need to be here. We need to

Stewardship, Mission, and Sheep
Oh, that picture of Jesus carrying the lost sheep back to the fold! It is an image that most anyone who attended Sunday school has in their memory bank. Strength & Hope
The truth revealed in these words provides a daily guide. God is the author and sustainer of all things and is the strength we need for today and the hope we have for tomorrow. When the way forward seems unclear, God’s people have learned to rely on the truth that God is always at work. It is true for us

Twelve years ago at our Global Mission partner, the Village of Hope, Zambia, Benedict Schwartz bought 1,000 fingerling tilapia for the 7 acres of wetlands on their site. This year, Benedict designed a cage for catching tilapia, and two months ago they used it for their first catch. They emptied the cage and there were enough fish to feed all
ZFest Planning
Hello Zion Friends and Families. As I’m sitting down to write this, I realize in my almost three years here at Zion, this my first newsletter article. As the Facility Coordinator, I have somewhat of a behind-the-scenes job focused on scheduling, building security and IT duties. I’ve had the privilege to see many programming events and celebrations, as well as

Fall 2022 at Zion!
Our mission is to partner with families for faith formation and connection. We are always looking for ways to connect with you and to be helpful to families as they seek to raise their children in the faith. There is nothing like fall in Minnesota! But, there is also nothing like the busyness that accompanies it. Registrations, new schedules, new routines, new forms
Meditation Trail
Are you aware of Zion’s meditation trail just to the south of our main parking lot? The trail has a new theme of “Peace “ for its second year, chosen by one of Zion’s confirmation groups (pictured). What perfect timing as the whole world seems to be searching for peace in our troubled world. Please take some time to find
“Advent” Appreciation
After two years of waiting, the Zion staff was delighted to be able to share a fun celebration honoring some of our wonderful volunteers on August 3. We enjoyed worship with communion and a picnic lunch, followed by some light entertainment. We are so grateful to each of our volunteers! Please know that you matter and each of your contributions

Look Up To The Stars
Since NASA released the first images from the James Webb space telescope, revealing the largest and most intensive view of the universe, I can’t help but think of Psalm 8: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what are mere mortals that you are mindful of
Make Music a Priority
When talking to educators in the last months of summer, there’s a feeling that “we’re already there!” These hard working planners have already plotted out what’s needed for the new learning year to begin in the fall. During August, the music ministries at Zion are doing the same thing. Choir & handbell directors are meeting to plan out the Sunday
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Are you a knitter or crocheter? Zion is looking for folks, young or old, to participate in the prayer shawl ministry. You can work independently or as part of a group. Each knitter/crocheter begins each shawl with prayers and blessings for the recipient. Intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. The gift of a prayer shawl enables the
Quilting Group
The Zion Quilt Group has completed and donated eleven quilts to the Eagles Nest (a home for United States veterans) so far in 2022. We also have completed four baby quilts that will go to children in foster care. We use donated cotton quilting fabric cut into 100 six by eight-inch rectangles that, sewn together, create a 60”x 80” twin
Financial Report 2022.06
It is an exciting time at Zion as we continue to rebuild and recover from our COVID days. For the month of June, our offerings were $49,600 which is about $1,000 more than we gave last June. For the year to date, our total income is around $366,000 which is about $5,000 less than we had at this point last
Senior Spotlight: Sam Yost
I’ve been blessed with incredible parents, a loving home, and support not everyone is fortunate enough to have. I’m lucky to live the life I do, however, everyone has valleys to walk through. Some valleys are deeper and darker than others. A lot of the time, it’s easy to lose sight of the blessings. It’s my trust in God that
Дякую тобі (Thank You)
Thanks to everyone who has donated household items, food, and monetary support to the Ukrainian families. They are doing pretty well and are working with different agencies to get their paperwork in order so they can get jobs. Fall, Stress, & Grace
We can’t believe we are talking about it already, as it feels like school just ended, but fall is right around the corner! With fall comes all things new: new teachers, schedules, classes, routines, practices, teams, and clubs. Sprinkle in a little stress and exhaustion as we transition and modify our summer sleep schedule into early mornings for school, and
Zion’s Redeemer Connection
Global Missions welcomed Sally Ankerfelt, Minister of Outreach at our partner church, Redeemer Lutheran in Minneapolis, at the July committee meeting. Sally provided us with an update on the happenings at Redeemer and specifically asked that we share Redeemer’s gratitude and appreciation for Zion’s financial support over the years and prayers during these times. Their most exciting news is that

That is God for You
As I write this, it is the 3rd day of Vacation Bible School. I am not exaggerating when I say that I wish every one of you were able to witness what happens during a week of VBS. The Virtue of Patience
I think almost everyone has heard the phrase “patience is a virtue.” We are counseled to be patient and good things come to those who wait. Of course, it can be easier said than done. Ask any seven-year-old during Christmas time. The members of Zion have had many opportunities over the past two years to work on this virtue. We
Call Committee Update 2022.06
The Council has appointed the 7-member Call Committee, along with alternates. A Call Committee is tasked with discerning the will of God for our future. It is a tall order! Refugee Support
In May, Zion’s church council approved the creation of a Ukrainian Refugee Working Group to investigate the opportunities and possibilities of sponsoring a Ukrainian refugee family in Buffalo. The group is researching and learning about the different opportunities offered by Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service and Arrive Ministries, and investigating sponsorship with other area churches, and will make a recommendation
Financial Report 2022.05
The finance report for the month of May looks much like those of recent months. Our income last month was a little over $58,500 which is about 5.5% more than was given in May of 2021. Income for the year to date still lags behind last year’s by about $16,000 or 4.8%. With the resumption of our programming, expenses for

Images of Ukrainians fleeing by foot, car, or train, children and belongings in tow. Financial Report 2022.04
There is good news and not-so-good news in the financial life of Zion. The good news is that our expenses have risen because we have almost returned to our staffing and program levels of the past. It is wonderful to see the many faces visible in all areas of our church. Our April General Fund income of over $83,000 was

Entering my second year on Zion’s Church Council, and a second year on the Executive Committee as treasurer, I am thankful for a faith journey that includes the capable people I serve with. It is all a learning experience! I am especially proud of my seven grandchildren (ages 15 to 26) and their own church involvement, whether that be mentoring,

Abundant Life
Jesus came that you may have life and not just life—abundant life! One of my seminary professors use to say that Jesus breaks in to the monotonous, mind-numbing, tedium of everyday life and proclaims: there is more! I think about that in terms of life in the church as well. There is life here at Zion, to be sure. There

Looking Ahead to Summer at Zion
Summer officially begins in June, but we all know that some people begin to check out of the routine of worship around the last week of May. Statistics show that churches see a 30% decrease in attendance over the summer months. Is there any way to change this? First … Thank you for your faithful giving and for sharing the
Financial Report 2022.03
The Finance Committee would like to share the summary of Zion’s financial condition as of the end of March. In the General Fund, our total income for the month was $56,365. This is about $13,000 or 18.76% less than we received in March of 2021. Our expenses for the month were about $10,000 more than those of a year ago.
Spring Awakening
Okay, I’m being a little bold to title this as “Spring” considering on April 15 it snowed most of the morning and the forecast has the temperature in the low 30’s but it is still spring. What I really want to talk about is a different kind of spring – “awakening.” We have just celebrated Easter. Now we are entering

What It Means To Be Back
On a Sunday in early March, I was chatting with some members of the congregation about various things, as I like to do before and after services. During a couple of these conversations, I heard a recurring theme come up regarding in-person services. The recurring theme was about how these members had realized how much they missed being physically in
We are Easter People
We will soon enter the holiest of holy times in the Church year. Holy week. More than a way of remembering, we participate in the events of our Lord’s Passion during Holy Week. We begin with Palm Sunday and shouts of “Hosanna!”. Those shouts quickly become the shouts of “Crucify Him”. During Holy Week, we do not ask what the
Cemetery Changes
The Zion cemetery board held its winter meeting in early March and approved significant modifications to Zion cemetery this summer. Last summer, Zion purchased 3 acres surrounding the cemetery. The purchase extended the cemetery about 50 feet further to the south of the existing property line and also to the east (see the associated land plot photo). The long-term plan

Newborns aren’t identifying themselves by their political affiliations, gender roles, religion or culture. They are just existing. That changes dramatically during the teenage years. An Expansive Lent
Lent has always been one of my favorite seasons of the church year. That may seem odd, since it is almost always equated with sacrifice, confession, and a sort of dreariness. Not that our Lenten journey shouldn’t elicit some solemnity as we journey alongside of Jesus toward his death on the cross. There is much to be gained from an

Membership Data
How many members does Zion have? Simple question, but the answer is complex and this time last year, we really didn’t have an answer that we felt was very accurate. So, the council formed a small working group to develop policies and processes associated with membership at Zion. The constitution provides some information and direction on membership but not a

Women’s Ministry at Zion seeks to compassionately engage women through fellowship, service, and study to encourage and strengthen faith. Looking Back on 2021
I’ve had a pretty obvious theme for most of my articles this year – Change. We continue on that theme for this month. But first I would like to update everyone on some of the things that have occurred over the past year. At the December 2019 Congregational Meeting two items were voted on and passed by the Congregation: The
Is Zion a Healthy Congregation?
It’s not so much that we are afraid of change or so in love with the old ways, but it’s that place in between that we fear. It’s like being between two trapezes. It’s Linus when his blanket is in the dryer. There’s nothing to hold on to. ~Marilyn Ferguson, American Futurist Zion has been through a great deal of
Teen Talk 2021.12
Teenagers, by definition, are not adults. They don’t think things through and they make questionable decisions. Think back to when you were a teen. Future Mission Trip Opportunities
For many years, Zion has provided global travel opportunities to participate with our mission partners in Jamaica and Zambia. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in both of these mission trips and

Teen Talk 2021.10
When we have toddlers we usually know why they’re upset. They want something they can’t have, they want to do something they can’t do. Maybe they fell and got an owie. Their reasons for being upset are usually pretty obvious. The reason behind a teen’s sour mood, however, is at times a little more elusive. Maybe they aren’t willing to

Faithfulness During Transition
In 2020 COVID19 forced all of society into many changes – from the way companies hold meetings, to how our children go to school, to the way people buy groceries. At Zion, we changed the way we worshiped and how we gather in fellowship. So in 2021, a transition in pastors that lead our congregation is just another change to

Shared Ministry
One year ago I started thinking about how Zion volunteers would re-enter all of Zion’s ministries after the COVID year. I realized that my job at Zion could be easily split between a shared ministry coordinator and a worship coordinator. The church council approved the plan in October 2020 and I’m thrilled that Kim Haggen is working with us as

Intentional Interim Ministry
Well…I had a good laugh today—shouldn’t we have at least one good laugh every day? I decided to look up the word interim. The phrase that popped up as a synonym for interim is makeshift. Not exactly how I see my ministry with you at Zion! Let’s move on to a different synonym; thrown together. Nope, not how I see my work

General Fund income for the month of July was just over $51,000 which is about 8% lower than what was received in July of 2020. Expenses for the General Fund were about $54,500. Council Update 2021.08
Last month I compared where our church and congregation is currently to looking at the horizon in anticipation of the sunrise and what it will bring. While there are still a lot of questions yet to be answered some things are moving ahead. The Sunday school program is coming together for this fall, staffing vacancies are starting to get filled,
Confirmation Update Fall 2021
By Tammy Zumbusch & Holly Husom, Interim Confirmation Coordinators Among the many things COVID took from us, community seems to be one of the greatest longings crossing all generational lines. We need each other. Even more than that, we belong to each other. In Paul’s letter to the Romans he writes; So, in Christ we, though many, form one body,
The Green Season
We are in the middle of the great, green, growing season in the church. That’s how Godly Play, a Sunday school curriculum I taught for some years, describes the season after Pentecost. The church year begins at Advent, which usually begins right after Thanksgiving. Advent comes in with a rush, as we prepare for the Christ light to come into
Camp Wapo 2021
Zion had 54 campers, 1st-12th grade, attend Lake Wapogasset Bible Camp this July. Although church staff couldn’t be onsite for the whole week this year at Wapo, Angela Bengtson and I were excited to go for a day visit. Here’s what our day was like… We spent the morning at Camp Wapo. For COVID safety, Wapo’s daily chapel service was
Fall 2021 Youth Group
Thankful that Covid restrictions have lightened up, we can meet again safely outdoors! We had our first-ever outdoor movie – we saw the movie Grown Ups. We had many new faces and enjoyed hearing the laughter and seeing the smiles! We look forward to doing it again soon! We are getting together a few times a month – any incoming
Sunday School Joy
Hello Zion Kids and Families! I hope you are all enjoying your summer! Guess what? We have really missed seeing all of you! I am happy to share with you the excitement and energy are beginning to build over here at Zion! I am bursting at the seams with JOY, to welcome back our children and families to Zion Sunday
It’s Never Too Early to Consider Having a Will
The saying goes, “You can’t take it with you.” However, you certainly do have the ability to decide where it goes. That is one of the benefits of planning and having a will. God has entrusted you with your assets, and this can be your way of passing them on according to your wishes and faith. For those with younger
Financial Report 2021.06
The following summarizes the financial activity of Zion as of the end of June. Giving in June to the General Fund was about 8.6% lower compared to June 2020. For the year to date, the General Fund income is about $9000 less than what was received at this point in 2020. Expenses, with the exception of Operating Expense, continue to
Appreciating the Dawn
I will make a confession. I’m not really a morning person. But, I’m married to a morning person and almost every job I’ve had in my adult life has required an earlier than preferred wake-up call. To be clear, this isn’t really a complaint. I really like those early hours of the morning as the sun is coming up and
Pastor Dave’s Move
In March of 2019, I came to Zion as part-time Interim Pastor for Visitation and Pastoral Care. At that time, it was thought that the interim would likely be brief until a settled full-time Pastor for Congregational Life was called. None of us expected two and a half years to go by. Part of the “interim” label is the understanding
Annual Membership Review
The Zion constitution states: The Congregation Council shall provide for an annual review of the membership roster. Well…. To tell you the truth, we haven’t been very good at doing this in the past, but we are working on changing that. Most churches aren’t very good at keeping their membership rosters updated, but a small group of Zion council members,
Found a Way through Music
John grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa, where his family attended Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Not going to church was never an option. My parents were very committed to their faith. When I was nine my dad died. My mom carried on their encouragement of my church involvement. Her dedication to missions – especially Native Americans in the west – always
What Is a Member
What does it mean to be a member of Zion? Simple question, right? But in fact, the question is very complex. Are there different types of members? What activities help define membership? If I go to church periodically, then I’m a member of Zion, right? All very good questions. The answers may surprise you! The constitution defines four different members:
Change
Looking back over the past 15 months it would be fair to say that change has been a constant theme. Whether it has been related to COVID19-related changes or the broader world, change is the reality we live with today. But change can mean many things to many people. Depending on the situation, it can be a time of worry
A Time of Opportunity
It’s a unique time at Zion. As we celebrate the nearly 12 years of ministry that Pastor Ted has provided, it’s also known that Bristol Reading and I are interims, and both of us are actively interviewing for settled pastoral calls. Zion has openings for a full-time youth director and, eventually, staff for Children, Youth, and Family, and someone to
A Note from Pastor Ted
“What an awesome ministry Zion has!” I have heard that statement numerous times over the last nearly 12 years. It has been a joy to be a part of this awesome ministry. While I have enjoyed our ministry together, I am writing to inform you that I have accepted a call as an Interim Pastor to serve Prairie Lutheran Church
Nick Sjolin
I am married to my beautiful wife Missy for going on four years. We have two lovely children: Colt, age 3, and Estella, 3 months. We live in Buffalo, MN. I believe strongly that the Lord will always provide us with what we need, not what we want or think that we need, and that there is a master plan
Safe Arrival in Zambia
By Kathleen and Benedict We left Minnesota three weeks ago amid the beautiful colors of Minnesota in the fall. Driving across the US to MD we were in awe of the beauty that God has created. After a short time with children and grandchildren on the east coast, we were able to safely return to Zambia. As we drove up
Financial Report 2020.10
The Church Council and the Finance Committee continues to monitor Zion’s financial information. Total income year-to-date for 2020 is down about 10% compared to 2019. General Fund year-to-date expenses for 2020 are about 11% lower than 2019 mainly due to reduced payroll, ministry, operations, and property related expenses. October 2020 General Fund expenses exceeded October 2020 General Fund total income
God Will Handle It

A Time for Everything
Dear Zion Family, As I write this, I am remembering these words from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (from the Message)— There’s an opportune time to do things, a right time for everything on the earth: A right time for birth and another for death, A right time to plant and another to reap, A right time to kill and another to heal,
All Earth is Hopeful
Hope is a word that Christians use often. It can be used as a noun or a verb and gives the image of desire and anticipation. One synonym often used for hope is expectation, but to expect has a sense of some amount of certainty and imminence that hope doesn’t always convey. We hope when we don’t know if or
A Note from Pastor Suzi
Dearest Zion Family, It is through an unexpected moving of the Holy Spirit and mixed emotions that I sit down to write this letter. This letter is to inform the Zion community that I have accepted a call to be the program director of Camp Wapo and Ox Lake. This acceptance has come after a long period of discernment, prayer,
Stop and Listen to God
Katie grew up in a Lutheran church in central Wisconsin, also called Zion Lutheran, and attended a Lutheran school from age 3 through 8th grade. My grandparents, Grandma Helen and Grandpa Clarence, both impacted my faith growing up. We lived next door to my grandparents and I was very close to them. I have so many fond memories of time
Music Can Speak To Us
Mike grew up in north central Iowa and attended a small Baptist church. The Old Rugged Cross is a special hymn for me. Growing up, this was a hymn that my great aunt sang at many funerals and church services. Each time I hear it, it takes me back. It wasn’t until I turned 20 that I was baptized, and
No More Excuses
Growing up in Wayzata, MN, my family was always active at St. Phillip the Deacon. My dad sang in the choir and my mom helped out on Altar Guild. The Davidson family of seven rarely missed a Sunday and filled the same pew in front on the right side of the sanctuary, ten feet away from the pulpit where the
Rediscovering Faith Life
Jameson grew up attending Ostmark Lutheran Church, which is between Watkins and Litchfield. I think most of my faith comes from the New Testament and the books of the Apostles. It is a reminder that it is important to be part of something bigger than yourself and provides a basic reminder to treat people decently. My favorite hymn is probably
Jameson Wakefield
Part of Something Bigger Jameson Wakefield was elected in December 2019 to serve on Zion’s council from 2020-2022. Jameson grew up attending Ostmark Lutheran Church, which is between Watkins and Litchfield. I think most of my faith comes from the New Testament and the books of the Apostles. It is a reminder that it is important to be part of
Those Who Sing Pray Twice
Sue and I met while attending college at Concordia in Moorhead, MN, back in 1968. We must have had the right amount of similarities and differences to get married and this year we celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary. We are blessed with two daughters, six granddaughters, one grandson, and rumors of an arrival of a “great” next spring. A shared

My wife, Mary and I have lived in Buffalo for 17 years. We raised our children here (Emily, Elizabeth, and Mike). Early in our marriage we had lived in South Minneapolis, and had belonged to a Catholic church there. When we first moved to Buffalo, we joined St. Francis parish. But our eldest child shared a locker with Amanda Burgdorf,

Dale is a life-long member of Zion and has many childhood and adult memories of Zion Somehow the annual Christmas Eve service has a way of flooding my heart with many of them. Zion is special for me because I have been able to be
YES, Harvest of Hands is Worth It!
What does the Harvest of Hands committee do all year long and why do they do it? Harvest of Hands started 40 years ago this year. The event started small with a few women wanting to do something extra. Over the years, it has grown and changed with the times. Volunteers have come and gone. Volunteers meet the second and
God is Real
Angie has been a member of Zion her whole life, and now attends alongside over 70 close family members. My ancestors were founders of Zion Lutheran Church in 1866. Zion at the time was called Carlslund Lutheran Church. Zion is a great place to grow in faith and now I am seeing the faith growing through my own children here;
School of Hope Library
Zion’s Legacy Funds at Work in Zambia The School of Hope library will soon be ready for books and library furniture. The walls are up and the roof is on. The inside plastering is almost finished so it can be painted. The floor needs to have the final smooth layer applied and electricity and lights need to be installed. The
Blessing Closet Goals for 2018
The first quarterly distribution of Zion’s Blessing Closet was in August of 2015. To date, we have served 1,700 families with 4,000 kids that received 57,000 items of clothing. During these distributions, we were able to partner with other non-profits by giving away bikes, books, school supplies, coats, and holiday baskets. We have experienced tremendous support from Zion’s staff and
A Growing Church
I’ve been a single mom for most of my life. I’m so proud of my kids and even though life has had its many challenges, I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world. I’ve worn two uniforms, which is something that I am incredibly proud of. I was active duty Navy, then after taking a 14-year break, I joined
Singing is Beyond Words
Jim and I have been married for 33 years. His sister was a high school friend, and Jim was in my sister’s class, so we have known each other for a long time. I have been an English teacher since 1982, so technically yes, I am licensed to correct your grammar. Jim is currently a contractor and handyman. We have
Depicting God Through Time
Bob grew up in a Baptist missionary family, and spent his younger years in the Philippines, including two years in Japanese internment camps during WWII. My dad had me learn John 14:1-3 when we were standing in line for roll call in an internment camp. Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In
Showing Love
I was raised Presbyterian, then married a Baptist. I have had faith since I was a very young girl. Cleo was born and raised in Howard Lake, along with her five brothers and sisters. She met her husband, Bob, while attending Bethel College and they married in 1959. They have 3 children: Mark, Stephen (& Lisa), and Karen (& Sam
Blessing Closet Update
The Blessing Closet ministry, which began at Zion in 2015, collects, sorts, and distributes new and slightly used children’s (infant to high school age) clothing free to kids in our community and surrounding areas. It has been a huge success, and Zion has distributed over 10,000 items of clothing, shoes, and coats to approximately 1,000 local children in need of
7 Reasons Why …
… We encourage your family to attend church on a regular basis … 1. Commandment It is one of the Ten Commandments. “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.” Attending church is showing obedience and honor to God. This is a day to rest (for some) from our usual labors and to enjoy a place of peace and solace,
Mary Mahlberg
When Mary moved to Buffalo as a newlywed for her new husband’s first job, she was still in her last year of college at the University of Minnesota. Finding a church home was important to them and they attended several churches in Buffalo. Mary had been brought up in a Christian home and was finding her in-laws to be wonderful
